Our Mentors
Read Ahead, since its founding, has been inspired by the power of leveraging corporate resources for community impact. Over 1,400 mentors from our partner organizations participate in our program annually. Mentors spend 45 minutes each week (or partner with a colleague to participate every other week) reading and mentoring with their student. The time, care, and dedication volunteer mentors bring to Read Ahead each week is at the core of our impact for students.
Through our signature program, mentors provide:
1:1 support during 45-minute sessions each week or every other week, from October to June;
A commitment to developing a meaningful relationship with a NYC elementary school student;
A love of reading and the power it has to impact a student’s life;
Support and guidance through a fun, educator-designed literacy curriculum, targeted to individual students’ needs;
A belief in the deep impact a mentoring relationship can have on a child.

Read Ahead supports and prepares mentors by providing:
Online on-demand training and resources for all mentors throughout the year;
Matching with a student based on their demographics, interests, background, and schedule availability;
Ongoing technology and scheduling support;
An educator-designed literacy curriculum for 2020-21 virtual sessions;
Support from a trained Read Ahead staff member who can guide and enrich the mentoring relationship.
