The mission of the Read Ahead Junior Board is to foster a network of emerging young professional leaders committed to making a significant impact on their communities. They do this by increasing awareness of Read Ahead's mission, and by raising funds to support the goals of our program and the children we serve.
Each year the Junior Board raises critical funds to support Read Ahead’s partner elementary schools that do not receive funding from a corporate partner. Their signature Strikes, Spares, and Splits event is a bowling benefit that has sold out for the past four years!
Being a part of the Junior Board is a way to enhance your professional and social networks through professional development nights, Junior Board outings, and leadership opportunities on subcommittees.
More than 50% of our Junior Board members volunteer as mentors in Read Ahead’s weekly program!
Throughout the school year (September – June), the Junior Board meets to plan fundraising events and initiatives so they can achieve ambitious goals and help make Read Ahead possible at some of our highest need schools. Since 2017, the Junior Board has raised over $100,000 annually in support of P.S. 125 and P.S. 36 in Harlem and P.S. 130 in Chinatown.
The Junior Board is led by two Co-Chairs who represent the group at the quarterly Board of Directors meetings, and work with the chairs of the three subcommittees: Marketing & Communications, Governance & Recruitment, and Events & Sponsorships. The Junior Board works in collaboration with Read Ahead's full-time professional staff and Board of Directors to align the goals of the group with the mission of the organization.
