Black Lives Matter
Read Ahead’s response to an emotional week
All of us at Read Ahead are relieved that a jury found Derek Chauvin guilty on all counts for the murder of George Floyd this week. Our hearts and thoughts remain with George Floyd’s family and friends, and we hope this verdict brings them some much-needed solace. While we are grateful for this verdict, it is not justice. George Floyd should be alive today. Justice can only be achieved when the conditions and institutions that enabled George Floyd’s death are permanently uprooted from America.
This has been an emotional week. We mourn the death of 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant, who was shot and killed by police–after calling them to seek their help and protection–minutes before Derek Chauvin’s verdict was announced. Yesterday, George Floyd’s family attended the funeral for Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man who was shot by police less than two weeks ago. The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Botham Jean, Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo, Ma’Khia Bryant, and Andrew Brown Jr. by police officers are the most recent losses of Black and Brown life in America’s long-standing legacy of anti-Blackness, which is deeply rooted in our history of institutional and systemic racism.
We are an organization that mainly serves Black and Brown students and families in New York City. Everyone involved with Read Ahead cares deeply about the children we serve, and we are acutely aware of the deep pain felt by BIPOC members of our community. As such, we believe it is important to not just hope for, but work toward, a future that is safe for Black and Brown people, especially children. A core part of our mission is to make a positive impact on the lives of the students and families we serve.
Tuesday’s verdict was possible because 17-year-old Darnella Frazier, who was walking with her 9-year-old cousin, bravely stopped to film the murder. This act was the catalyst for a historic moment, and underscores the importance of acting against acts of racism and injustices in our country, whether they are small or large.
Last year, Read Ahead made an explicit commitment to becoming anti-racist in all our practices, policies, programs, and culture. We have done much so far, but there is still more to do. We are working hard to make sure that Read Ahead is a space where our Black, Latinx, Asian, Indigenous, and all BIPOC students feel uplifted and supported. We are striving to be even better allies to the children, families, and communities we serve in New York City. We will continue to support calls for racial justice and stand with those who are demanding an end to racism, white supremacy, and police brutality.
We are grateful for our school partners, volunteers, corporate partners, and supporters who work alongside us on behalf of those we serve–our students, families, and NYC communities. At Read Ahead, we are committed to using our organization and our platform to advocate for anti-racist practices in our own program, the education sector, and the society at large. We ask our entire Read Ahead community to join us in this commitment.
Las Vidas Negras Importan
Todos en Read Ahead estamos aliviados de que un jurado haya encontrado a Derek Chauvin culpable de todos los cargos por el asesinato de George Floyd esta semana. Nuestros corazones y pensamientos permanecen con la familia y los amigos de George Floyd, y esperamos que este veredicto les brinde el consuelo que tanto necesitan. Aunque estamos agradecidos por este veredicto, entendemos que no es justicia. George Floyd debería estar vivo hoy. La justicia sólo se puede lograr cuando las condiciones e instituciones que permitieron la muerte de George Floyd se desarraigan permanentemente de los Estados Unidos.
Esta ha sido una semana emocional. Lamentamos la muerte de Ma’Khia Bryant de 16 años, quien fue asesinada a tiros por la policía después de llamarlos para pedir ayuda y protección, minutos antes de que se anunciara el veredicto de Derek Chauvin.
