By facilitating reading-based mentoring programs in New York City public schools, we help students master literacy and life. Come share a page in a child’s life.

Our Mission

Like the plot of a book, the course of a child’s life is set in the opening chapters. Read Ahead believes that reading side by side with children helps them move forward on the right page. Read Ahead volunteers devote their lunch hours to helping elementary school students master both literacy and life. Their mentoring does more than develop necessary reading skills. It enables children to create lives for themselves that are fulfilling, and often, inspiring.

Reading Mentors Program

Every week throughout the school year, over 1,000 New Yorkers involved in our Reading Mentors program spend their lunch hours travelling to nearby public schools and volunteering as reading mentors to elementary school students who are struggling to read.

The highlight of the evening was the first official unveiling of the organization’s new name and new vision.
