Our Mission

Like the plot of a book, the course of a child’s life is set in the opening chapters. Read Ahead believes that reading side by side with children helps them move forward on the right page. Read Ahead volunteers devote their lunch hours to helping elementary school students master both literacy and life. Their mentoring does more than develop necessary reading skills. It enables children to create lives for themselves that are fulfilling, and often, inspiring.

Share a page in a child’s life.

Read Across America Day 2015

During the week of March 2, Read Ahead students across New York City celebrated Read Across America Day with their volunteer mentors. They took turns reading “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” as a group and each student discussed the language and themes of the classic book with his or her mentor, allowing the students to open up about their own goals and the places they’d like to go.

Our Program

Every week throughout the school year, over 1,000 New Yorkers involved in our program spend their lunch hours travelling to nearby public schools and volunteering as reading mentors to elementary school students who are struggling to read.
